I see that it's been 20 days since I last blogged, so it must be time to do it again. One of the neat things about seeing all these groups is that I get to see a lot of composers of famous music. For instance, I saw the original Couriers. They have been singing together with the same 3 men for 50 years. One of them is the composer of "The Lighthouse." Among other groups who sang that were the Smiley's. I don't remember how many songs he has composed, but you can imagine that in 50 years it's been a lot. One of the ones he's composed recently that I think might become quite well known is called, "The Next Time I Get Married, I'm going to Be the Groom." It, of course, is about the marriage of the church and the lamb.

The Collingsworths were here this weekend and they were excellent. We also had a pianist from Denver Sunday night who was quite good and refreshing. He worked for Denver First Church of the Nazarene for 35 years before going on the solo circuit.

The weather has been great the past week or so. It's been in the 80's every day. Of couse it's still cold in the sanctuary of the church!

Last Wednesday we had 4 missionaries. Two were from Argentina and their daughter and her husband are going to Papau, New Guinea. Their presentation was quite unique.

Last Thursday I picked up Margee and Ward in Sanford and we went to see the shuttle go up. That was a very neat experience. When I saw John Glenn go into orbit, I never dreamed of all that was to come with the space program. I certainly didn't think I'd ever see anything go up to go into space. In fact I remember wondering if John Glenn would actually come down!

Saturday I took Margee and Ward to their cruise ship and Saturday I will pick them up and take them to their motel again. Then they'll fly home on Sunday.

I talked to some people from New Hampshire Saturday. That was the first time I'd talked to anyone from there. I also talked to a banker's wife from Michigan. He is on the national board of a group of community banks and often goes to Washington, D.C. for meetings. She said it isn't as much fun as it was a few years back, but she's hopeful that it will get better.

Have a good day/evening!

Bill Bailey Winter Music Convention

Where do I begin?! Last week was very good and extremely busy. At 9 am we had fellowship time with coffee, juice, and donuts. At 10 am we had chapel. Tuesday and Thursday mornings Randy Perry was the speaker and he and his wife sang. He is really good. He's about 2 inches taller than Libby and so was their dad. He was quite excited because, since he is in the ministry, he seldom gets to see Libby and her family. They were there Thursday and Friday nights, so they got to spend some time together. He even sang their finale with them on Thursday night. Libby and their son and one of their singers were at chapel on Thursday too. It was sort of neat to see them in very casual clothes and Libby's hair was combed, but not really fixed like it is on stage and she wasn't wearing makeup.

Wednesday Jerry Goff spoke and he and his wife, Jan, sang. He, too, is very good. He explained that the more pure gold is, the softer it is and thus, the streets in heaven will be very easy to walk on because of it being so soft and pliable! It's also affected by pressure and something else that I don't remember.

Friday Big Mo spoke and he also sang and did the Burrial of Jesus story. I had never seen him before and he is, indeed, huge. He's lost 66 pounds, and I have no idea what he looked like before that. His wife was also there and she is quite slim and trim. Their son travels with them also, and he played an electronic device that I had never seen before. He demonstrated some of the things it will do and several people looked at it after chapel. It is about 15 x 15 by 6 inches tall and is made by Roland. I think it is called a palmmaster or palmsonic or something like that. It is a little like electronic drums, but way more. He played it with his hands, fingers, and palms.

Saturday Mark Trammel spoke and his quartet also sang. I really think they were better in chapel than in the arena in the evening. That fourth voice certainly makes a difference! I don't think I've mentioned that the room where chapel is held probably holds 300 and was full every morning.

The matinee was at 1:30 in the afternoon and was held in the arena that holds 3800. It was never full. Tuesday it was Forgiven Trio and Palmetto State Quartet. They aren't favorites of mine and I went in about half way through.

Wednesday's matinee was Ronnie and Michael Booth, and Jim Brady doing some of their solos and them all singing together too. Of course Michael was high as a kite!

Thursday's matinee was Archie Watkins and the Smokey Mountain Reunion and I hadn't heard them before and don't really need to hear them again. Most of you know that I don't like twang!

Friday's matinee was Tony Gore and the Pfeiffers. Tony is okay, and the Pfeiffers are suburb. I have never heard anyone play the trumpet as well as John does. I've never heard him off pitch at all and I'm sure he could outplay Al Hirt with ease! Mary Jane and Candy are excellent on the alto and tenor saxes too.

The Saturday matinee was Young Quartet Day with Soul'd Out and Driven Quartets. I skipped it, but I was told that Driven was excellent. A person has to have some sleep sometime!

The evenings were when the real music took place. It started at 7 and lasted until between 11 and 11:30 every night. I usually parked the van at 8:30 am or so and didn't move it until after the evening concert. I just went to sit and "rest" in it between events.

Monday evening was the first event and had The Blackwood Brothers, who flew in from their Arizona tour, Ivan Parker, the Chuck Wagon Gang, the Freemans, and the Dove Brothers. Of course the Blackwoods were my favorite. They really helped me out after Bob died.

Tuesday night was really good! It was the Booth Brothers, Legacy Five, Greater Vision, and the three of them joining for their Jubilee! I'm not sure which of them was the most wound up! The sound of them all together was really something else!

Wednesday evening was the Collingsworth Family, the Booth Brothers again, Brian Free and Assurance, and the Browns from LeMars, Iowa. Kim Collingsworth plays her own personal Yamaha piano wherever she goes. Lake Gibson Church has one just like it and they paid thirty some thousand for it. They list for $100,000. I imagine either someone gave Kim hers or they got a very good deal on it. Their whole family is just fabulous!

Thursday night was the Perry's, Triumphant, Jeff and Sheri Easter, Karen Peck and New River, the Dixie Echos, and Jerry Goff was the host/MC. Tracy Stuffle has lost 70 pounds since his heart surgery and Libby has been losing too.

Friday night was the Kingsmen, Gold City, the Perrys again, the Talley Trio, and Tribute Quartet. When Tribute had the bus fire a couple of weeks ago, they lost every thing except their sound equipment and some paperwork.

Saturday night was the Inspirations, the McKamey's, the Mark Trammel Quartet, the Bowling Family and the Crist Family. I even sat through the one group on that list that I really do NOT like at all. Wasn't I nice? The Bowling Family had a brief video about their bus wreck. It was quite impressive. I'd never seen them before, and they were pretty good. When he woke up he was on a stretcher on the highway and heard a helicopter. He also heard a paramedic say his BP was 80 over 40 and he though that didn't sound too good.

Thursday noon there was a dinner for all the booster club member and several spoke at it. Poor Libby stepped up the to podium to speak and informed Bill that next time she needs a box to stand on! Her head was barely over the top of it! I talked to her a little bit after the dinner, and she said Tracy was not well in June when they went on vacation. She said they were at the beach and she carried everything, because he could barely carry himself along. She said that when they were at the Brumley Fest in August where I saw them the doctors were thinking he had a hiatal herea. Their son does sound for them.

The meal was prepared by Michala Brown. She went to chef school in France. She also does all their violin arrangements, sings, plays violin, and does all the book work for the Browns. I'll have to say that she's a very good chef. She also writes a column every month for Singing News.

They announced that next Ernie Haas and Signature Sound will most likely be at the Convention. It will be February 6-11. I have it on my calendar!

Last night at church it was the Couriers and the Calvarymen. I hadn't heard either of them, and they were good. The Couriers have been singing 50 years and are still the original singers. I was in the parking lot eating a sandwich about 4:15 and some other people were there visiting when one of them came over to my van and told me he was hungry and could he have a bite of my sandwich! I told him no and visited with him and another guy for a while. I later found out that they were two of the Calvarymen! Before I went in, a little sports car pulled in next to me that was a bit unusual. It was bright yellow, blue, and red! The driver was a man alone and appeared to be in his 70's! When I got out to go in he got out too and I told him that was a pretty snappy car for someone in his age group to be driving. He said it made him feel 10 years or perhaps 40 years younger. It was a Mazda and the only one like it in the world. I hadn't seen it before, but he seems to go to Lake Gibson Church.

Last Monday when I went to Palmetto, I went to the beach for a while and parked next to a BMW with the top down. I never did see anyone around it to see what they looked like. That was the only time I've been to the beach so far this winter. But, I'll go again.

This was Bill Bailey's 25th anniversary of promoting concerts. He started when he was 16 and his first group was the Perry's. He mowed yards to get the money to do it and always paid the artists when they got off the bus. He also pastors a very large church that he planted. I have no idea what he pays out for the Winter Convention. I'm sure that Manatee Civic Center isn't cheap for six days!

I've probably bored you long enough for a while, so I'd better proof this and sign off. Have a good day!
